Like to Draw?
The beautiful, small town of Abingdon, VA was alive with arts, crafts, music, food, and plenty of visitors last weekend for the annual Highlands Festival. We met many wonderful people and made some lasting friendships with other artists. Even Ruby the Ruby-throated Hummingbird enjoyed his time at the festival and in and around Abingdon.
Do you draw, create illustrations, or are you interested in how an illustration for a children’s book is done? Helena has been working on the illustrations for our latest children’s picture book, experimenting with different color palettes, designs, and techniques. She has put together a few videos of her illustrating techniques and character design. Check out her video on how to draw Fisherman Bob.

How much do you know about copyright? According to the U. S. Copyright Office, “Copyright is a type of intellectual property that protects original works of authorship as soon as an author fixes the work in a tangible form of expression. In copyright law, there are a lot of different types of works, including paintings, photographs, illustrations, musical compositions, sound recordings, computer programs, books, poems, blog posts, movies, architectural works, plays, and so much more!” This is means that once you create an original work and fix it – take a photograph, write a poem/story, or draw an illustration – you are the author and owner. Organizations and companies besides the creator can be copyright owners as in “works made for hire”. This would be in the scope of employment or with independent contractors of commissioned work. The term of copyright protection is the life of the author plus seventy years.
Copyright exists automatically in an original work once fixed but copyright registration enhances your authorship. Mermaid Cove Publishing registers their authors’ and illustrators’ works with the U. S. Copyright Office. To find out more about copyright law, visit www.copyright.gov
