Do you have dreams?
“Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart.”
~Roy T. Bennett, The Light of the Heart
Most of us live within our comfort zones. We’re comfortable with our life; things are easy, and we don’t want to mess it up with change. But have you ever felt stuck or had the desire for more for your life? Do you have dreams that you think of as just that-a dream, never to become reality?
The fear of failure or of making mistakes is one of the main reasons many people stay in that comfort zone, never reaching for that dream. We don’t want to risk walking into something we can’t handle, or we may fail at. Our society has us worrying about being judged or looked negatively on. But we should think of it this way; if you make mistakes or even fail, it means you are trying new things.
Jordan Peterson, psychologist, professor, and author of 12 Rules of Life and Beyond Order, offers many thought-provoking ideas on personal growth and success, and encourages individuals to step outside their comfort zones.
• “Don’t avoid something frightening if it stands in your way; instead, go at it directly.”
• “Success is defined by how you handle the setbacks and challenges along the way.”
• “Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today.”
It’s easy to talk yourself into staying in that comfort zone. We get used to the feeling of safety. But what if we ask ourselves why not? when we dream or wonder. Why not pursue a better job? Why not publish that story floating around in your brain? Why not save and work towards that dream of traveling the world? Why not ________________? (you fill in the blank).
It’s time to stop being pushed around by your fears. Ask yourself why not? and pursue that dream or at least work towards that dream. Make mistakes and even fall down but pick yourself back up and keep on going.
