The turning of leaves …

“There is a subtle magic in the turning of the leaves.”

October is coming to an end this week, as will Daylight Savings Time for most of us. We have many new email subscribers this week that we would like to welcome and we look forward to sharing our newsletter with you.

In our last two newsletters, we introduced you to two of our newest authors. This week we would like to welcome Gary Brown to Mermaid Cove. Gary is a non-fiction author living on the coast of Virginia. He has practiced as a professional counselor, is an experienced airline transport pilot, has worked as an actor, and has held adjunct teaching positions. Gary’s first book was A World of His Own: Understanding the Difference Between the World God Created and the World We Have Now. His forthcoming new book, A Practical Guide to Changing Our World Through Personal Transformation, is a condensed version of A World of His Own, highlighting the main points.

Many of you have asked us what a hybrid publisher is and what’s the difference in using a hybrid publisher and self-publishing, so I thought I would address this subject today.

First as a true hybrid publisher, Mermaid Cove is selective in what we publish and we share the costs, and risks, of publishing, with our authors. Under the hybrid publishing model, both the publisher and the author share the costs of publishing and distributing. In exchange, the author receives a higher-than-industry standard share of sales (royalties), which is currently 60-80% with Mermaid Cove.

In hybrid publishing, the author and publisher share the book production costs, depending on their contract, and both participate in marketing. Due to this, hybrid publishers do not pay advances. And yes, with hybrid publishing the author retains book rights. An author with a hybrid publisher assumes a share of a book’s financial risk (via paying upfront fees) in exchange for more freedom and flexibility over publication.

Now, on the other hand, you can self-publish your own book with very little money, but to make a profit self-publishers must invest money in their books. Good selling books require many services: editing, proofreading, book design, layout, production, distribution, and marketing.

Marketing (beyond the Amazon listing and expanded distribution channels from publishing sites) as a self-published author is time consuming and can get costly. Local independent bookstores, book fairs and festivals, websites, online listings … all of this takes time and money. Mermaid Cove helps our authors get their books in local bookstores, attend fairs and festivals, offers our published books for sale on our website, and we keep a stock of every book we publish on hand.
