J. Scott Clawson is a writer and photographer who lives on Gwynn’s Island in Virginia. He writes and takes photographs as often as his day job allows.

Scott’s love for stories is undeniable. Living on a small island has given him the freedom to spend many hours watching, and taking photographs of, the wildlife in his garden, on the beach and in the wetlands.  This led him to naturally begin writing stories about the whimsical wildlife world around him. It is important to Scott that his books be fantastical and fun so that all children will be drawn to them.

Besides his passion for writing, Scott is an avid photographer, capturing any nature and architecture he encounters.  He always has his cameras with him as he travels to capture the uniqueness and beauty of the world around us.

Scott has found a great partner in illustrator, Helena Carvel. Helena pours her heart and soul into every illustration and has brought his characters to life. The two are collaborating on Scott’s The Hawk and the Hummingbird® book series.

Hawk and Hummingbird illustrations

Helena Crevel is an illustrator born in Ukraine and currently working from her studio in Paris, France.
From the tiniest insects to the grandest of beasts, Helena has a special passion for bringing all types of creatures to the pages of children’s’ stories.
Her love for nature and storytelling through art was inspired by a rich background of folktales that surrounded Helena from an early age.
After being expelled from an art school at an early age for adding cartoon faces to her realistic animal anatomy drawings, she didn’t give up and continued her art lessons with a private tutor and artist after moving to Canada in her teenage years.
Now, living in the city of light, she continues her adventure and shares her passion with children, while teaching art and working on illustrating stories.
